For all users of the facility
All independent users of the facility must pass Radiation Safety 106. When you have successfully passed the test make sure you forward your Certificate to me. The process should not take more than 48 h.
For the powder X-ray diffraction facility users
The training consists of one group session followed by one or more individual sessions. For the group session the attendees are expected to familiarize themselves with the instrument operation instructions and have a basic understanding of how X-rays are generated. A printed copy of the manual along with a pen and pencil will be very useful both during the group and during the individual session(s). You don’t need to bring a sample to either.
Individual training sessions are conducted one-on-one with the laboratory Director. The trainee is expected to conduct a basic diffraction experiment safely and correctly as demonstrated during the group session by the instructor, and be able to explain why each step of the experiment is carried out. Should the trainee make substantial errors during the experiment planning and execution the individual training will be repeated. Most students require no more than two individual sessions.
For the single-crystal X-ray diffraction facility users
This training is available to students who have successfully completed Chemical Crystallography 613 or an equivalent course elsewhere. The training consists of one-on-one sessions with the laboratory Director. During the first two sessions the Director explains and demonstrates the procedure for a basic single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiment followed by data processing. In subsequent sessions the trainee demonstrates how to conduct a straightforward single-crystal X-ray experiment safely and correctly under the supervision of the laboratory director. Should the trainee make substantial errors during the experiment planning and execution the individual training will be repeated. Dr. Mike Tretbar shared a powerpoint created after the training: Single Crystal X-ray Diffraction Experiment.
Beyond the basics
Additional individual or group training sessions on advanced topics are conducted as necessary.
